Vassalboro Memorial Day 2009

VASSALBORO Memorial Day 2009

Memorial Day May 25th, 2009, was a great day weather-wise, attendance-wise, and seemed to be a great day for Reflection as well as Community Building. The committee that I have chaired for five years has wanted to keep the tone non-political, reverent, and community-oriented. The committee this year was made up of Rep. Bill Browne, Brian Naborowski, Maurice Pare, Karen Giles, Lisa Schwab, and Ben Clark, the music teacher at Vassalboro Community School.

Rep. Browne, Mr. Clark, and I are the three who have been involved all five years. Every year we assess ways that we can improve for next year.

We honor our Elderly by presenting a short concert at Volmer’s Country Living Center. We involve our town Organization's and Businesses by means of our parade which is usually approximately sixteen units each year. We reach out to Families by having some field day events so we all can relax and have old-fashioned, clean fun. If we don’t involve the children, Memorial Day will become old memories day. Our youth need to understand the past and the present because they are our future.

In order to respect that we are a wide-spread town with two villages or sections (as opposed to the original five), we have rotated the all important ceremony back and forth from North to East Vassalboro. Some of the townspeople are only semi-pleased with this arrangement, and we are working on changing this for next year. It has also been frustrating for us that we do not have Veterans and Those Who Serve currently join us for the day’s festivities. This looks to be changing for next year also!

Meanwhile, our ceremonies have featured ordained clergy, church lay leaders, our honorable senator and honorable representative, the scouts, and the VCS band. The Memorial Day photo book—on display at the Town Office—features samples of our past and present Fighters for Freedom to whom we will always be indebted.
